Half Top Covers - Good or Bad?

We quite often receive calls from customers asking about Half Top Covers, normally from people with soft tops. We dont sell Half Top covers and there is a very good reason for it. Many people think they are easier and quicker to fit than complete covers, which they arent, due to the number of straps involved.
These straps to attach the Half Top to the car and usually run over the bodywork. This is a BAD idea.
a) Any straps that run over paintwork will scratch in time as they are abrasive.
b) Any serious amount of wind will cause the Half top to lift like a parachute as the wind gets under it, which defeats the object of putting something on the soft top.
c) Some are not soft top safe as waterproofing agent seeps through cover into soft top which can cause marks which are hard to remove.
Anyone seriously thinking about buying one of these should ask the right questions first. The above opinions and information are based on our experiences.

Car Cleaning and Detailing

OK so we are now an authorised Autoglym supplier and after purchasing our initial stock, ( have to say it was like christmas day receiving all these goodies ) I thought I should test some of the products first hand.

After cleaning the car and removing most of the water with the Hydra Blade, I applied the Aqua Wax, while car was still wet, with one of the pack cloths, then I buffed it off with the other cloth. Have to say the shine was very noticeable and I can safely say this is great product if you are in a hurry or have limited time but want a brilliant waxed shine.

Full Picture walkthrough on these products will be online soon and also included in our Youtube Channel.

Classic Car Motorshow

With the internet side of the business booming this year, we decided not to show at this years Classic Car Motorshow, but couldnt resist the urge to go "as enthusiasts" and drool over some fantastic cars.

Leaving early in the Lancia Delta we made good time down the M6 to the NEC, arriving around 9:30am and even by that time the crowds were massing.

Lots to see during the 5 hrs we were there, everything from fantasic traditional classics to modern supercars. Personal favourites included the new VW Corrado, 3 amazing Deloreans and a wonderful Pearl Porsche 356 Speedster.

The biggest disappointment I felt was the new Lancia Delta, which doesnt look anything like the old Delta at all, infact it looks like any other Euro Box but with fancy lights added. What an opportunity missed when you look at what has been done with the the New Mini and Fiat 500.

Some of the best cars at the show can be seen here on our Flickr Tour

Why buy a Car Cover?

We have sold thousands of car covers over the years and here are some of the reasons why people buy them.

a) Bird Muck - If you leave your car outside, then bird excrement can be harmful to your paintwork. If you don't wash it off right away, your car's finish can be damaged. Some bird muck is so damaging that the only fix is a respray, even a buff and wax job won't completely restore the finish. A car cover will catch the poop before it does permanent damage. You may think this is never going to happen to your car, but we have seen it. The situation is normally worse in the summer, if it gets hot and people leave their cars unatended, during a holiday for example.

b) Tree Sap & Leaves - At certain times of the year sap, secreated from the leaves of trees can fall onto your car or windscreen and once it hardens it very difficult to remove. Leaves can block drainage channels and cause rain ingress into the car. Then you have the added threat of branches, buds, acorns, berries or worse falling onto the car if parked under trees.

c) Security - Many customers call and purchase a cover after having their car keyed or badges pinched, stating that the police have recommended they buy a car cover. With our locking kit and new ( in progress cover alarm system ) this makes the culprit think twice. Why choose your car when another is easier.

d) Polution & The Elements - Snow, frost, rain, hail etc are the main reason people by outdoor car covers.

e) Animals - Cats are a really big problem, especially with Soft Top Cars.

f) Dust & Protection - Indoor covers tend to be bought to keep dust off a car or protect from people in the garage brushing next to the car and scratching it by accident. Many under ground parking areas suffer badly with dust as other cars start and the exhaust blows dust from the floor up into the atmosphere which then settles on the other cars parked there.

g) Kids - A ball scuffing off the surface of a car can create a circular mark that can't be fixed by waxing of buffing. A car cover will prevent this.

Which ever way you look at it, buying the right cover can be an investment for the protection of your car. However its easy to buy the wrong cover as there are lots of bad ones about and you wont have to look hard to find them.....you will however have to look harder to find the good ones.

Classic Car = Classis Investment

In these turbulent times of stock market crashes and bank rescues, its a welcoming thought to think that a quality classic car, purchased out of a longing for something different, is more than likely the safest investment you could make.

Having bought our Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 1 many years ago, not as an investment, but as a "propper" car with character and pedigree, one thing is for sure is thats it is still worth more now than all the cars we have bought in the interim.

The term ‘classic car’ is difficult to define and has been used to describe nearly any car from the 1940s that has a fan base. In general terms cars over 15 years old begin to gain classic status so from an investment point of view many factors need to be considered. As with most investments the rules of supply and demand apply. The common interest shared by classics is that they have a fan base which creates the initial demand allowing it to retain, or in some cases appreciate in value.

Hence, I would recommend buying a classic car as an investment and of course, pop one of our car covers on it, makes perfect financial sense and now you can justfy it to the Mrs at last!

Faster than a speeding bullet!

On the day that Swindon council chose to abolish all speed cameras within their borough, a team of British engineers is aiming to break the 1,000mph (1,610km/h) barrier on wheels for the first time. The rocket powered craft called The Bloodhound, shown in the promotional video bears a striking resemblance to the craft Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond famoulsy piloted and crashed several years ago. Aiming to travel faster than a speeding bullet, we can count on one thing for sure. The Hamster wont be getting the call... watch video

Car Cover Fitting Guide

We took the time the other day to photograph each stage of covering our Lancia Delta Integrale. The car was clean having been covered earlier but had some dust on it after driving to a nearby location. So we started with a dusting off using the Dust Particle Removing Wand, then unscrewed the radio antenna from its base and covered the "pointy" base with some foam, before covering. See http://www.coveryourcar.co.uk/guide/coverguide.html
